FAQ: Installation

How do I install the Palm version?

Many people have difficulties installing large databases on Palm devices. The comments we provide are meant to guide you, but installation of software is a Palm (or Palm compatible) issue; it is not a problem with our software. Your best resource here is your Palm or Palm compatible documentation. Further suggestions:

  • You need to use your hotsync software to install files. From the Palm Desktop software, you may have a Hotsync menu with an "Install files option"; otherwise, look for an "Install" application (Windows, especially) in your Palm folder.

  • You need to copy at least TWO files onto your device: the Accio.prc program, and a language database. (If you add more than one language, you will add more databases.) Make sure you have enough room on your Palm. If you do NOT have enough room, try downloading the "compact" versions available for some dictionaries, from http://www.Acciodictionary.com/.

  • You may install the databases on a VFS card (memory card, memory stick, SD card, etc.). Most hotsync software will allow you to choose the card as a "destination" when you use the Install files program. Otherwise, you may load the files onto the device, and then copy them to the VFS card using the copy menu from the home screen of your Palm. Files should be in the /Palm/ or /Palm/Launcher/ directory.

  • If you get repeated incomplete installations of databases, you can try augmenting the memory of your conduit manager (if you are under Mac Classic). Otherwise, contact your Palm (or compatible) support.

Macintosh & Windows: Message indicating no dictionaries are installed?

You must not move the contents of the Accio folder; otherwise, Accio may not be able to find various files.

If you have several versions of Accio on your hard disk, the operating system may not know which version to launch. You should delete all but the most recent copy, and make sure that all your dictionary databases (including personal additions files) are located in the Accio/dictionaries folder.

Having multiple copies on your disk may also mean your aliases or Dock icon will launch the wrong version. If this is the case, delete the alias or icon and make a new one from the application in the Accio folder.

How do I install an iPod version?

You need to use the installer that comes with the downloaded product. Download the installer for the platform you use for iTunes (either Macintosh or Windows, and run the installer with your iPod plugged in.

If the installer does not recognize your iPod, please try these steps:

  • Make sure you have only one iPod connected to your computer.
  • Make sure "Disk-use is enabled". Disk-use allows our installer to access your iPod. To enable Disk-use, plug in your iPod, go to the Preferences panel of iTunes (under the "iTunes" menu on Macintosh; under the "Edit" menu of iTunes on Windows), and choose "iPod," and then check the box for "enable disk-use." You're ready to go!

How to update a Mac OS X or Windows version?

It's easy: go to the File or Accio menu and choose "Check for updates." The application will check for the updates and install them if you approve.
